The Different Types Of Stretch In Denim

The Different Types Of Jeans And Their Stretch

There’s one thing we can all associate jeans with and that’s the fact that they have stretched out and become too baggy over time. This has happened to probably every single one of us out there who loves denim, so how do we get around that issue? You might buy the perfect fitting pair in the store, only to wear them a couple of times and realise they have stretched out a size and now don’t fit very well. There’s tips like buying them extremely, painfully tight, and wearing them so they stretch out to be the perfect fit (this was common for my era) but it’s a pain in the butt (quite literally) and it is really frustrating to do.

As the times have changed though, you are in luck because so many brands have brought out denim with different stretch and fabrications, meaning that baggy, saggy jeans are a thing of the past and your jeans wont stretch out. How? It’s all in the denim! If you want the perfect fitting jeans, find out what the different denim fabrications mean and how/if they will stretch out below.

100% Cotton Denim

Unfortunately with 100% cotton denim, it’s a fabric that will ALWAYS stretch out no matter what you do. Since it has no stretch in the fabrication, this means that the cotton threads will expand themselves and never go back to the smaller size they were before. Not permanently anyway. Sure you can wash and dry them on hot, which will temporarily shrink them, but they will stretch right back out again. The best thing you can do for 100% cotton jeans is to buy them really small, make them damp, and wear them. The water on the denim will stretch it quite quickly, so they wont stay tight for ages, but this can be very painful, so I often find that 100% cotton denim is better when worn slouchy, plus it’s comfier too. Or, why not go vintage and find a pair of vintage Levi’s or RE/DONE Levi’s which have already been broken in and stretched by the previous wearer? Saves you the job!

AG The Stilt Crop Jeans in 18 Years Ripped Review 3

98/2 Stretch Blends

Jeans with 98% cotton and 2% elastane/lycra combination do stretch out, but not as badly as rigid denim. I find out of stretch jeans, these are the ones that will bag out the most because they don’t have much recovery in them. This is the standard makeup of stretch denim jeans and once you wear them a few times, they will get looser and stretch out. So again, you can combat this by buying them really tight and waiting for them to stretch to fit perfectly, but don’t wash or dry them on hot because it will damage the elastic in the denim, meaning they will be even more baggier than before. The more you attempt to shrink these jeans, the worse they will become over time. So definitely buy them as tight as you can handle to begin with.

Cotton/Poly Blends

There’s a denim blend that I find doesn’t stretch out very much and doesn’t have much give at all and that’s the cotton/poly blend. I don’t mean a super stretch pair of jeans which polyester in which makes them scratchy and itchy on your skin, I actually mean a cotton/poly blend only. I haven’t seen any of these in a while, but they used to be really popular back in the days of Rock & Republic. This denim blend didn’t stretch out much at all. They are stiffer and they are not the most comfiest of jeans, tending to run small because of the non stretch factor, but they don’t stretch out really badly and they hold their shape and size with a lot of wear. The only downside with this blend though is it can cause a lot of gapping at the back of the waist due to the fabrication. But if you want a more rigid pair of jeans which don’t stretch too much, try looking for a cotton/poly blend. It was usually 60% cotton and 40% polyester.

4 Way Stretch Denim

DL1961 and Yoga Jeans were one of the first to release a type of 4 way stretch denim, meaning the jeans won’t sag or lose their shape as they stretch out in 4 different directions, then recover very well. I own quite a few pairs of the DL1961 Jeans with the DLpro fabrication and they are wonderful – the denim is super soft and stretchy, just like a legging, but the material is thicker, so they are flattering like jeans. The older versions are a poly/cotton blend, but the newer ones have elastane and lycra. They really don’t get baggy!

Rag & Bone The Skinny Jeans in Harbour Review

Super Stretch/Jegging Jeans

When it comes to the classic Jegging or Super Stretch Jean that is extremely popular and everywhere today, you do need to be careful. They may be really comfortable and as stretchy as leggings, but if you don’t get them right, they will stretch and get saggy, just like the classic 98/2 blend. I find the cheaper brands which make these jeans tend to become quite baggy after time, but if you choose something like the 7 For All Mankind Leggings, the normal PAIGE Verdugo jeans, the Rag & Bone Legging, the J Brand 620, the new GRLFND skinny jeans or the AG Legging Jeans, these are very stretchy and comfortable, with minimal stretching out qualities. This does depend on how much you wear them though. I find the Rag & Bone and GRLFRND do stretch out quite a bit out of that list.

Super Stretch/Retain Its Shape Denim

Now this is somewhat of a miracle isn’t it? But it exists. It’s a blend of amazing stretch which snaps back into shape without damage, a soft cotton, and a poly mix to keep it held in place. So far, the best super stretchy denim that I have come across which actually retains its shape and size is the PAIGE TRANSCEND Denim, The James Jeans Twiggy Dancer, and the new DL1961 Instasculpt Denim. These are like super stretchy leggings which you can pull out almost 2 sizes, but they mould to your body and cling like leggings do. Even after multiple wears, they don’t stretch out and lose their shape at all, they remain tight and perfect. I’ve got experience with both the TRANSCEND Denim and the Twiggy Dancer, so I can say this is true! So if you are looking for a very comfortable jean to wear that wont stretch out, these are it.

Jogg Jeans

Finally, I’ve included the Jogg Jeans from Diesel. You might not have heard about these, but since it’s a newer fabrication, I have to include it. These are a hybrid denim which mixes denim and sweat pants together, creating a soft, comfortable sweat pant jean. Now, depending on which wash and cut you buy and whether or not you buy an older, original pair of Jogg Jeans or a newer pair, they will stretch. Adam has had countless pairs of Jogg Jeans because he loves the comfort, but the older pairs have become baggy and lost their shape. The newer styles tend to retain that a little bit better. They are great jeans though!

General Advice On Stretchy Jeans

My best advice to you if you if you want a classic jean with a more rigid or thicker denim, but you hate your jeans sagging in the butt and legs, is to buy them really tight and stretch them out, like I mentioned above. You can wet stretch them by dampening the tight areas and wearing them until they fit perfectly. Sometimes this is the only option if you have fallen in love with a specific pair you know will be loose after wear, just take a size down if you know it will stretch out and wet stretch them. I know it’s hassle, but if you are a denim lover and you can’t resist the jeans, it’s the only way!

Otherwise, go for one of the other denim blends that I mentioned above. If you love a tight fit that is super skinny, then a TRANSCEND or Twiggy Dancer would be ideal for you because of how comfy they are and how much stretch they contain. They are definitely worth the investment and are a pleasure, not a chore, to wear. But please do take all the general advice from this post if you can, to help you make up your mind. Do leave me any questions below in the comments section too!

Hi Lorna, I need a little guidance and hope you can help me. I purchased the J Brand mid rise capris because of the short inseam (26″ and I am 5’3″). However, I’m not sure if I should keep them for a few reasons.
I didn’t read the description well enough and realized they are 65% cotton 33% lyocell, and 2% elastane. Does that make them stretch out a ton? The 27 fit fine, but I think I might need to size down. I prefer a stretchier denim, but this seems like it was stretch too much and not retain shape.
Second, the 26″ inseam is full length for me and not tight at the ankle like I thought they might be. I would just love to find a jean that is tighter in the ankle and it seems impossible with my frame.
Last, the rise was nice, but I think I would prefer something a little higher (I’m short, but with a long torso). Do you have any suggestions for me?

      Hi Sara!

It sounds like you don’t like them as much as you should and sometimes that’s all we need to send them back. Your new jeans should be a pair you love and are incredibly excited to wear. What wash did you buy? Do you have the link? I can maybe try and find you something similar 🙂 It is trickier to find the jeans with a tight ankle when they are cropped, due to them being cropped and meant to fit around the calf, which is bigger than the ankle, so they might often be a little looser in that region, unfortunately 🙁

Lorna, that’s exactly what I needed to hear. I’m sending them back ASAP lol! I looked at them so many times and thought they were finally going to be “the ones” and I felt guilty about returning them.

Those are the ones I bought. My favorite jeans right now are AG skinny legging ankle jeans. It has a 28″ inseam, but they are tight enough at the ankle and I just roll them up a bit. The only downside is they are pretty low on my frame (long torso and short legs) and I need a little more coverage!

    Thanks for this info!

I just bought a pair of 7 For All Mankind Ginger Flares and am debating whether or not I bought the right size. I am normally a 26 or 27 depending on the brand/fit. This pair is made of a broken twill and the 7 site specifically advises to order one size down due to the high stretch factor (they are 98% cotton 2% spandex). I went to Nordstrom and tried on the size 25 and 24 and ended up going with the 24. The 24’s were tight but not ridiculous. I have only worn them for a few hours but they haven’t seemed to stretch much and I’m wondering if I should have gone with the 25’s…Any specific advice on the 98 cotton/2 spandex blend? Same as with lycra?

This is such a helpful article. I recently purchased a pair of Paige Verdugo and I LOVED them for the first two weeks – I couldn’t believe how much they did not stretch out after wears. Then I washed them (following instructions, and did not dry) and now they get baggy after one wear. But all the reviews (like yours!) say that Paige Verdugo should not get baggy. Did I just purchase a size too big? At this point I am tempted to throw them in the dryer to see if that will help them keep their shape better, even though everyone says not to dry. I’m looking for another pair of denim now, but I’m afraid to drop $160 on designer denim if the brands that everyone says don’t get baggy did for me. Do you have any suggestions on what I might have done wrong or how I can make sure to find a pair that won’t change after washing?

Hi Mary! Oh no! That shouldn’t happen! Which wash/colour did you buy? Was it the Transcend fabric at all or just the simple cotton/elastane blend? Definitely don’t put them in the dryer. When you heat up the denim, the elasticity gets damaged even more, so you might end up with a temporary shrinkage on the jeans, but they will become even more baggy than they were to start with. Did you wash them on hot? And when you bought them, were they really tight or they had a comfortable fit? Sorry for all the questions, it will help in making sure you get the right jeans next time! Lorna.

They were the Verdugo Transcend Crop – black wash. I washed with cold water and air dried, just like the instructions! They were a comfortable fit when I purchased them. I am wondering if I need to buy a snugger fit next time? Thanks for your quick responses.

That is very strange actually. I would get in touch with the PAIGE customer service and explain to them that this has happened as the TRANSCEND fabric isn’t meant to do that. Perhaps they might exchange them for you? They are a great team. With jeans though, it’s always best to buy them really tight to begin with so they mould to your body shape. If they’re comfortable before, then they will most likely always become baggy. If you do get to exchange with PAIGE, I would size down if you can!

Thanks for your help. I actually contacted Nordstrom first, since I had purchased through them. They are exchanging for another size – they said the same things you did about how the fabric should have better hold. Hope sizing down works! Thanks again.

Good day! I have a pair of DIESEL Lowette jeans. They are stretch. I want to buy a Skinzee super-low and these are Total Recovery Stretch. My question is what size to buy. I wear a size 31 in the stretch. Should I go for a 30 in the Skinzee then?

You’re welcome. The general rule is buy jeans that are really tight and uncomfortable to begin with because they stretch out, so you have to break them in to have the perfect fit after stretch. I hope that helps!

Hi! Thank you for such a helpful article! I recently purchased 2 different styles of Mother jeans (the Cruiser flare & the Looker skinny) in a size 26. The 26s fit snug but comfortable with first trying them on. They are both a cotton/elastane combo stretch, so I am concerned with whether or not they will bag out. I also tryed on the same pairs in a 25, which is much snugger, but not uncomfortable – I can still button/zip them, but they do create a bit of a “muffin top” look, unfortunately. My question is this: should I stick with the 26s, or go with the snugger 25s, hoping they will stretch out? These are my first pairs of Mother jeans, so I am not as familiar with their jeans. Thanks for the advice!

Hi! Usually the general rule is unless the jeans are made from a 4 way stretch or recovery denim like DL1961 or PAIGE TRANSCEND fabric, then they will stretch out. If you plan on wearing them quite a lot then I would take the size which are smaller if they aren’t too painful or uncomfortable. If they are too tight in the waist for you, you can always put water on it and wear them with a wet waist, that stretches the denim out more and quite quickly. I hope that helps!

    Hi Lorna,

I have a new pair of Sissy Boy Skinny Leg (Jon Jon) jeans that fit a tad bit too tight around the waist and the thighs. The denim consists of 63% Cotton, 35% Polyester and 2% Spandex. Will the jeans stretch out over time or should I return them (which I hope I will not have to since I have fallen in love with them)? Any advice would be much appreciated.

    Thank you 🙂

Hi 🙂 I think they will stretch out a bit with wear, but if they don’t, you could always try dampening them in those areas as the water will stretch the jeans quicker. Don’t do it until you have worn them about 5 times though as they will probably stretch on their own and you don’t want to make them too big. Good luck!

    Hi Lorna,
I’ve been trying to find a cheaper pair of skinny jeans that won’t sag and stretch. I was looking into a pair from Forever 21 online but I found out they were 96% polyester. Should I be worried and find a new pair?

Hi, I would avoid them. 96% polyester sounds very itchy, not breathable, and like they would lose shape quite a lot. What sort of price range were you looking for? The only true jeans I know that don’t stretch out at all and they hold their shape is the PAIGE Transcend Jeans, but they are fairly pricey 🙂

    Hi Lorna
I am trying to decide between size 28 and size 27 Jag “Rosie” High rise skinny crop jeans. They’re made out of 92.5% cotton, 5% polyester and 2.5% elastane. I’m usually a size 10-12 in pants so these sizes are a bit new to me. Plus not sure how they’ll stretch in the long run as I have other Jag jeans and they are ALL DIFFERENT sizes. They’re all made in different countries and with different blends so that could possibly explain the inconsistency in sizing.
The size 28 is snug but comfortable around the calf and thigh area but even after 5mins wearing them around the house the waist seems too loose and I’m already pulling them up. The size 27 fits perfectly around the waist and thigh area but is VERY tight around the calf. Do you think they’ll stretch much? If so, where? I really don’t need another pair of jeans that are falling off me yet don’t want to have a pair that’s lying around unworn because they’re uncomfortable 🙂
    Thanks 🙂

Hi Ania, I have actually never heard of Jag jeans before, so I honestly can’t comment on the sizing of them as I don’t know anything about them. It depends on the quality of the materials used as well. Do you perhaps have a link or some more information?

I would be afraid to say as I really don’t know anything about the brand and the quality of the cotton or fabrics they’re using. It sounds like it’s pretty inconsistent with the sizing and that’s probably down to the fabric blends all being different, so without me having tried this brand or this particular pair, I’m not able to say. So sorry! You could post in our forum and see if anyone else can help though x.

Hi Lorna. I’m a faithful True Religion (billy, size 28) and 7FAMK (size 27) customer but lately I’ve found that every pair of 7FAMK I’ve bought lose their shape or stretch out A LOT and I prefer something like citizens of humanity (racer, size 29) or True Religion because they are super thick. I’m willing to give Paige or any other brand you recommend a try.
Could you please help me decide if I should but a size 27 or 28 in Paige jeans? I don’t want them to stretch out. I want them to be really tight and hold their shape!

Hi Ana, if you want jeans that don’t stretch out, I would say try the Transcend fabric from PAIGE. It keeps its shape, is stretchy, and wont bag out, however it’s a thin denim, not thick. Thicker denim usually always stretches out unfortunately as it’s closer to its cotton form. Maybe a 28 would work in PAIGE?

  14. May 21, 2017 / 3:41 am

I’m very interested in Citizens of Humanity Rocket skinny jeans, but I’m confused as each pair has a different makeup of materials. For example, you mentioned -Byron bay, 46% cotton, 27% lyocell, 25% rayon, 2% spandex and Axel 44% rayon, 29% cotton, 25% cupro, 2% polyurethane, which have different materials. Others I’ve looked at have 1) 91% Cotton; 8% T400 Elasto; 1% spandex, 2) empire 43% cotton / 40% rayon 15% polyester / 2% polyurethane, do you know which have the most to least stretch for example? I’ve noticed some are sold as they mess up after they wash, are some more durable than others?

I haven’t heard of any of them messing up after being washed? Where did you hear that? The jeans with the most stretch are usually the jeans which contain Lyocell and Rayon, those are extremely stretchy and soft fabrics. The jeans with the least stretch are usually the 98/2 blend as they are thicker and not as soft. I hope that helps!

I’ve got similar COH with same materials and they stretch when worn but need a few days to relax…I found them stiff at first almost uncomfortable but because these jeans are designer and worth a few bucks I thought I’d give it a go . I can’t remember how I wash them but I must’ve shrunk the crap out of them or I gained 15 lbs… unlikely everything else fits fine. These may be the type of jeans that just need TLC. Wash or hand wash them with cold water.,,,hang dry and tumble dry them for like a minute. I’m a busy mom so I think I just basically threw them in the dryer at some point forgetting about what they’re made of ….hope this helps.

      Hi Linda,

I don’t have this exactly wash, but I do have a few pairs of the Legging Ankle in a 98% cotton and 2% polyurethane blend. I found that they stretch a very small amount, but never got baggy or saggy on me as I had them tightly fitted to start with. I would say as long as they are tight when you get then (not painful) then you should be ok when they stretchy a very small amount.

GAP is selling these archive reissue high rise denim shorts. I bought the 27 regular and 27 petite. The 27 petite have the perfect fit. They aren’t loose and more on the tighter side so they are pretty flattering. I am a petite girl so these are great shorts for me. They are on the shorter side though. On the other hand, the 27 regular are a little bit longer and bigger. Because these are 100% cotton denim, my first instinct is to keep the petite and return the regular but I also wonder if the petite size will be too short or if it will expand over time. The regular also fits well but is a little bit bigger. Based on my prior knowledge of 1000% cotton jeans and from reading this article, I want to keep the petite and return the regular but I wanted to hear your thoughts about what size to keep.

Hi, 100% cotton will stretch out so the 27’s you have will get bigger with wear. Maybe if the 27’s in petite have a good fit and the 27’s in regular are loose, you could swap and try a 26 in the regular? They might be better fitted and allow room for stretch? If longer is what you need and feel more comfortable in, I would probably go that route. I’ve got shorts I haven’t worn as I feel they are too short, so definitely don’t make that mistake!

I think this may be a silly question but does the wet stretch work with overalls too? I just bought an xs 100% cotton denim long pair of overalls and they are a size too small (it’s a struggle to get up the side buttons) but I love them and they are the last pair anywhere!

Thanks for explaining what happens with denim. i just thought the legs of my jeans were stretching out because I must be a weird shape

      Hi Sara,

It works with all denim! So yes, you can wet your overalls and wear them/stretch them out. I’ve never tried it on overalls personally, but it should be fairly similar to jeans. I’m not sure how much the button area would stretch though as it’s stitched a lot and the buttons are in a tougher area, but definitely give it a go! Let me know how you get on!

Hi, that depends on the weight and style of the denim as well, but generally a cotton and poly blend is stiffer with little stretch. Thanks!

Very great article! Definitely helped me decipher what category jeans with different material blends gal under. I have one specific pair of jeans that are 55% cotton, 10% rayon, 33% poly and 2% spandex. They are a US size 11 and they fit well and hold their shape. Very stretchy but form fitting, once on. What type of category would the above mentioned fall under? There is no style or fit label on them so o have no idea what they’d be considered. Also, I seem to be different sizes in all types of jean styles so it makes it really hard for me when trying on jeans. Very discouraging when I’m smaller in some styles and larger in others. Any suggestions or guidance for different sizes to pull for different blends? Thank you! ????

Hi! Yeah all jeans brands run differently and all fabrics do as well, then there’s the washes to take into consideration. So barely any two pairs fit the same. Your fabric content is quite a standard one these days, doesn’t really fall under any label as such. The general rule is size up for 100% and rigid denim as they are very tight and restrictive, but will stretch out, and the super stretch legging jeans, size down. I hope that helps?

      Hi Erika!

The Tencel is definitely what makes them super soft, it’s a very soft material. That’s interesting to see they’re made mostly of it though, usually jeans are mostly cotton, so I’ve actually not come across that. Do they feel more like a chino style pant with a sheen? Based on what they look like, I would think they would stretch a bit, but I’m not very familiar with the majority of the fabric being Tencel so I couldn’t say for definite.

      Thanks!

      • September 20, 2017 / 2:32 am

They are hard to describe. It’s a thick soft material, no sheen, but super soft and very stretchy. But definitely looks like a “jean”. And fit like a glove. I like them enough to try them! Thanks.

Erika, howdid your Jeans with Tencel go? Did they end up giving a bit? I’ve got a pair I’m looking at with similar ratio and wonder whether to size down or not. 29 fits comfortable around waist but possibly to comfortable, sort of how I want my jeans to ‘stretch out too’. 28 is tighter but if they give half a size then they would be great. Thoughts from your experience? Or from Lorna?

Hello. I bought FRAME skinny jeans in size 28 and had so much room, where I am able to stick my whole arm down in. I purchased another pair same pair but different color in size 27. I’m hoping if it’s a little too tight, that it would stretch out a little. So you think it would stretch out a tiny bit for me? The material is blend of Cotton/polyester/Lycra® spandex. Thank you.

Hello, yes Lorena, I just bought a pair of Hudson jeans. The fabric content is 98 percent cotton and 2 percent polyurethane. (High Rise)…Size 27. It felt right at the beginning. But after an hour or so of eating the stomach area grew tremendously. I am a size 4 or 6. They were pretty pricey. Should I have bought a smaller size?

Hi, probably sizing down would have been a better idea. It’s a good idea to get those types of jeans tight at first and stretch them, otherwise they can end up stretching out too much. If they usually fit fine when you buy them and aren’t tight, it’s often the case they stretch to be too big. Hope that helps!

What do you think of the Cheap Monday jeans ? they are made of 73% Organic cotton,25% Polyester,2% Elastane.

Hi, yeah I’ve heard of them. They’re jeans are cheap and low quality. I’ve not tried them myself, but you can probably guarantee they will stretch out a lot and get baggy. I can’t really tell if a cheap denim fabric will run big or small as it comes down to the quality and the wash etc as well, so I don’t think I could advise here. Maybe try and just return them if they don’t work out?

Hi Lorna! So within the past year or so, Abercrombie & Fitch (where I usually get my jeans) overhauled their entire jeans collection. I checked, and the material combination is now different; it’s 88% cotton, 10% polyester, and 2% elastane. Will they stretch out a lot and become really baggy?

Hi Jenn, unfortunately it’s not possible to say based on that. It depends on how well the jeans are made, how close the denim is knitted together, how thick the denim is etc. I’ve not tried any of the new ones so I can’t say, sorry!

Hello, Lorna! Great read — tons of helpful info!!!

I’m on the hunt to find a pair of summer weight jeans, higher waist (10”), with a light color/wash. I do want some stretch — love the softness too, and if full length, I’d need at least a 32” inseam as I’m 5’9”. I don’t mind spending $ on the right pair of jeans.
For reference, my current ‘go to’ is a pair of Mother jeans (Roller Crop) and my fav all-time was a pair of AG’s that were super stretchy, snug in all the right places, darker wash, perfect inseam and slight boot cut — of course, over 2 years, I wore them out. I went to purchase another pair @ Bloomies, and they no longer carried them and I ditched them w/out writing down the cotton + mix (although I recall them having 3 materials, 1 or which I believe may have been lyocell ???). I would have bought 3 pairs of these perfect jeans!!! Silly me!

I know, right! Just the right bit of different 🙂 Size down compared to my normal mother size. I usually wear a 27, but those jeans have 2% elastane, I think these have one. Or should I size up becauthey have less stretch? Thanks so much!

I’ve not tried them, but the difference between 1% and 2% is usually nothing. I’m pretty much a standard size 28 in all MOTHER so I would go for your normal size of 27 and see how that goes? The general rule is the less stretch, size up, the more stretch, size down, but like I said, 1-2 is nothing, so hopefully your normal size will work out. If not, is it free to exchange? 🙂

Hi I’ve got a denim dilemma? I just bought a gorgeous denim dress, 65%cotton, 33% polyester and 2% elastane, zipped from top to hem, (full length zip) perfect length perfect on hips great length on sleeves , but slightly tighter on boobs and tummy I fear a bigger size would be much too big on all the said places, would I be in danger of it splitting, seams or zip if I keep it? Or is it likely to loosen in time? Or do I go for the next size and hope it’ll shrink up? But I LOVE IT !

Hi Sue! If it’s well made I don’t think you’d be in any danger of splitting it, no more than a tight pair of jeans. How thin is the fabric? Denim usually stretches rather than shrinks, so it might give a bit with wear anyway! So glad you like the blog!

My advice would be to pull at the seams and see if they look sturdy and strong, but you can also do wet stretching on denim that’s thicker and sturdy, that works a treat on jeans so I don’t see why it wouldn’t work on a dress. It might be more beneficial actually as you can just stretch the places that need it, but given it’s much like a thick denim jean, it should stretch on its own I reckon, if you wear it enough. It sounds cool though, do you have any pics?

I’m a 56 year old male and I don’t like these strechy fabric jeans!! I grew up in an era where we men showed off our package and it was done by wearing 100% cotton jeans, tight as possible and hiked up until you got a wedgie. All that has changed, now we’ve gone from jeans falling off our ass, back to tight looking jeans — that really aren’t that tight because of the strechy fabric blends. Sorry but if i stand in the mirror to compare the exact same size Levi’s , one pair 100% cotton, vs. Another pair with the 2% Elastane, this is what happens, the appearance of my man bulge looks less defined — as the Elastane more or less “tents” my male anatomy. While it is obvious there is a bulge, the parts are not clear and crisp as when 100% cotton is worn. Furthermore, lets talk durability. Jeans were originally designed to be rugged and take abuse. I could wear holes in cotton blended stretchy jeans much faster when comparing to 100% cotton jeans. After repeated abuse, though the blended strechy fabric appears to be lightweight and ones movement seems to be much more flexible, i have noticed that the strechy fabric jeans developed “stress rips” in areas where 100% cotton jeans would not. These are an odd sort of stringy, strechy rip, unlike anything I’ve witnessed before. To get any sort of satisfaction out of strechy jeans, i have to buy them three sizes smaller, unfortunately, worn long periods, like over the road trips, they sag in the ass and tent in the front after 8 hours. It is a droopy and sloppy look, and because the lack of durability, popularity, look and popular culture dominates and promotes this as such a great product the manufacturers push it because they are able to sell more product to the dumbed down consumers.

Can I ask how you find the 100% cotton jeans when worn that tight comfortable? Are you not restricted to the point that sitting, walking stairs etc is really difficult?

Without getting to terribly intimate –there are obvious differences in the sexes, so It is possible I suppose that woman wearing a tight pair of jeans may not get a sense of intimate pleasure. Without sounding like a masochistic perv– that’s all I can say is that some receive a certain sense of pleasure from pressure points or a restricted feel against their body. On the other hand I suppose there are many men who live very monastic and pure lifestyles void of such thoughts.
As for the practicality of wearing 100% Cotton jeans to tight, I suppose I would not venture out into public if I could not navigate stairways or when and if finding it to difficult to pull up a chair to sit. Hence ones 100% Cotton jeans need a break in period, regardless of how tight they are. Previous generations of Women know this all to well. I clearly recall young girls when I was in Jr. high wearing camel toe all the time. They also wore mock and real rabbit jackets, a nice accent to the camel toe. My own Sister wore these, and was constantly debating jeans.
The durability issue is also a factor that I look at in a political sense, the Manufactures know they are making a lightweight garbage fabric with 2% spandex, maybe for less physical women the 2% spandex holds up well and is not viewed as garbage by them. Unfortunately I know first hand– as a man– while under a vehicle on pavement or while in the woods, scuffs on pavement, and poking tree branches cause the 2% fabric blend to fail. The manufactures know this fact but are relying on popular culture to promote this fabric, so they may reap the benefits when premature “wear and tear” replacement jeans are purchased. As for Women, because they lack the male anatomy, I can see how a touch of 2% Spandex may make them feel more comfortable and even for the man- as I said in the first post, when wearing the jeans with the 2% I felt more “flexible” and the fabric felt more “lightweight” , but as for me I can have flexibility in sweats or dress slacks and in the summer if it’s too hot I have several pairs of Cotton/Flax blend jeans that suit just fine. So there is really no way on earth I would want to trade in the “fit and feel” of 100% Cotton jeans close to my family jewels for a stretchy fabric that tents my male pride. On the other hand there are some men who will never ever consider wearing tight jeans, these men will likely endorse the 2% jean you tout because in reality — they are not really tight– they only look tight. “Nut huggers” was a street slang term used in the 1970’s. But a nice pair of 100% Cotton “nut huggers” are not easy for a man to maintain, his physical weight and diet if fluctuating can throw the jeans out of balance, manufacturers like Levi’s may introduce or eliminate a certain model, at one time everyone could go by the number system Levi’s had in place and they knew what “fit and feel” they were getting. And of course there is always the break in period to contend with. Furthermore even in the 1970’s there were many men from previous generations and others not participating in wearing “nut huggers.”
You also brought up and interesting fabric without the stretchy 2%, that is the 60/40 Cotton-Polyester blend. I have several pairs of these jeans. In some ways I like this blend, the fabric remains rigid, tough as nails, and a snug fitting pair of 60/40 Cotton-polyester blended jeans make for very good nut hugging. The problem I have with these are they are too dang hot in the summer, no, no, never in the summer. But on a very cold day – they are best.

Hi! My fav jeans at AG’s Legging, Angel and The Ballad (discontinued). I do have a few Paige too!
I love the 98% cotton/ 2% PU or Polyethylene blend of my AG jeans. I have an opportunity to purchase at a discount a pare of AG legging in a 98% cotton/ 2% elastane blend. What is the difference and will they feel and stretch the same as the PU?
    Thanks!

Hi Jodi! PU is short for polyurethane, and elastane is a hybridization of polyester and polyurethane, so they are pretty much the same thing, there shouldn’t be much difference between the two in theory. I’m unsure if I have tried the PU blend from AG myself, so I can’t say from experience, but given that elastane is a bi-product of PU, it’s close enough! Hope that helps!

Hello…I have to say that I am sooo unhappy with today’s jeans. With so much stretch, especially in the waistband, there is no flattery in the jeans anymore. For example, if you carry a little extra on the inner thigh, the jeans just conform to your shape and nothing at all is held in. (I am 5’4″ 120 lbs…just a little flabby on the thigh!) Older style jeans could hold you in a little and flatter areas. Now, it’s like wearing denim colored leggings…no shape or flattery at all…you see every imperfect area! So I have old, ripped out Express low rise 99% cotton/1% spandex and Gap 1969 87% cotton/12% polyester/1% spandex. These were the bomb…extremely flattering because although they had a small amount of stretch, they were made with a flattering shape that your body fit into while still retaining comfort. Can ANYONE guide me here? Does anyone still make jeans like that? (Maybe from 2009,2010?)

    • July 14, 2020 / 10:30 pm

Kelly Jones. I’m 5’3 125 lbs and have been on a mission to find jeans that flatter my shape and don’t show any bulges. I have found that curvy jeans fit my smaller waist and give me a little extra room in the thighs and butt. I also look for high rise at least 10” which flattens the stomach area. Loft has some jeans in high rise curvy and 98% cotton 2% spandex. If you shop on line you can read the material makeup. I wear a size 2 curvy in Loft Because I like a really tight fit. Loft jeans are thick denim, very good quality and soft as well. If you go to loft outlet Online you can find these jeans on sale for $25. Amazing! I never would have shopped there but I couldn’t find the material combo anywhere else and I am very happy with the fit and material. I bought the high rise curvy destruction jeans sz 2.

    hi,

thank you so much for all this infomation.
I bought jeans that run a bit too big and I cannot return them.
They are wearable but perfection would have been to size down.
They are 71% Cotton, 27% Polyester, 2% Elastane and I would like to know if I can shirink them a bit + if they will stretch a lot. I see the poly blend doesn’t but there being elastane as well, I’m not sure…

Thank you and have a nice day,

So I just bought the AG JEANS “The Farrah Skinny Ankle” (high rise skinny ankle). I bought them in two sizes and can’t decide which size to keep. I love the way the 27 fits, but the 26 also works too. The blend is 92% cotton, 6% polyester, 2% polyurethane. Will these stretch out slightly, or no? Can’t decide which to keep!! Help! And thanks so much in advance 🙂 This article is super helpful, had no idea this was such a popular topic, lol,

That will probably stretch a bit yeah, go with the 26 if they aren’t painful, if the 27 is slightly loose it will probably become too loose with a lot of wear. It depends how much you will wear them 🙂

Oooh. So good to know you are still replying to this old thread. Hey, if they are 100% cotton, they will stretch. Cotton usually stretches out almost a full size, but always go with what you feel comfortable in. It depends how much you’re going to wear them and I find usually if they’re too tight, you don’t even want to break them in because they’re just uncomfortable.

I am looking at a pair of Lucky Brand slim boyfriend jeans. It says they are 77% CTN (cotton?) and 23% Lyocell. I am usually a 25 or 26 in Lucky Brand. Will these be super stretchy? I know a lot of boyfriend jeans are very stiff, so with bigger thighs I would have to size up… what should I do with these?

Are you familiar with White House Black Market jeans? I am trying to figure out if their mid-rise skinny crop jean with a content of 88% cotton, 9% polyester and 3% spandex will stretch out and become too baggy. The size 0 is tight but wearable while the size 2 is looser and more comfortable but may end up stretching out too much after being worn.

Here we go again, wow this has been going on since 2016 now. Well, i’m a man. I wrote a while back. Couldn’t help notice this latest comment in my e-mail. It’s the end of January in northeast Ohio, the temps dropped considerably and snow is here, my jeans that are 54% cotton, 46% polyester (WITH NO STRETCHY ELASTANE OR SPANDEX) that have been sitting in a drawer all year are now being worn. They are warm and cozy and i can even go Camando and feel warm, i’m not saying they are like wearing thermal underwear, but the wind does not seem to penetrate the fibers as much. When any amount of spandex is added, the fibers are open to wind gusts. Thus, this proves that there is a denim blend for every occasion. Unfortunately, the manufacturers have stopped producing the 54% / 46% blend. My only problem with this blend is they are considerably hotter in the summer months and if one doesn’t care for this denim blend, like washing it inside out, little fuzzies can start to grow, someone told me this is called “pilling” but i’m not sure. I have a few pairs of these 514 Levi’s in a light washed out blue, they were all MADE IN CAMBODIA. I have a couple of other off brand designer jeans of the same blend. They too, behave the same. I can’t say it enough, whether your a guy or gal, your denim with the 1% & 2% will eventually stretch out. 100% cotton will slowly stretch out during every wear period, but will rebound after a wash and dry. I think denim with 1% & 2% Elastane or Spandex has fabric failure in the dryer. I think the fibers can’t take the heat, that is just a hypothesis on my part. I have a pair of Lees that are similar in content as the last who commented, these Lees are Cotton/POLYESTER/Spandex, they are way to light weight for Winter wearing because of the small amount of Spandex. Furthermore, I never put them in the dryer, they line dry. Do they hold shape? Well, the Polyester seems to help with holding shape a little, but all in all, i still prefer the old blends. Perhaps if the denim manufacturers would experiment with a less then 1% amount of spandex. I don’t know if such a ratio in fabric is possible. But it may prove to be a better blend. In the meantime, i still think that the American consumer is being the sucker here, the denim manufactures are blending in the strechy crap and promoting it as a positive, when in fact the strechy crap just causes people to run out and buy another pair sooner. If you have a pair if anything denim that is 46%/54% blend hang on to it and take good care of it, i doubt it will ever return.

HI there and thanks for this post! I am petite (size 26) with a thicker / athletic lower half and the only way that I can wear skinny jeans is it they have immediate stretch / give to them from the first moment they are put on. That is the only way I can get my thicker legs into them. I am finding that much of the current denim styles and blends, even the high-end versions are moving towards all cotton or cotton / poly blends and they don’t have much immediate give. I love DL and I am contemplating between two pairs – the same style – but with different compositions.

Which one of the following two blends will have more IMMEDIATE GIVE to them (if either)?
    89% COTTON, 10% POLYESTER, 1% LYCRA
    or
    58% COTTON, 28% TENCEL ™, 13% POLYESTER, 1% LYCRA

    Thank you!

Great article! Finding the right jeans is overwhelming. There are so many to choose from, even within a single brand. I’ve recently become a little obsessed with trying on jeans. It’s so easy to order and return now.

One question for you. When you refer to jeans stretching out after a few wears, do you mean that even after they are washed that they don’t return to form? Or do you mean that they become stretched out until they are washed again and then they get their form back?

    Thanks!

      Hi Brian,
They stretch out with wear, then when you wash them, they will go back to form for a temporary time, then stretch back out again. If there’s lycra or elastane in the denim though, always wash on cold. Don’t use heat as that can shrink up the denim and ruin the elasticity of them. Hope that helps!

This is a fantastic thread! I wish I’d come across it years ago, as I have a lovely pair of James Jeans that used to fit perfectly , then bagged out, and I kept putting them in the dryer to shrink them. Live and learn.

My question: I just purchased a pair of these 7 for all mankind jeans in my usual size 27 from a dept store. It was the last pair! However, on the company website, they recommend going up one size because the denim is “rigid”, stating that it will conform to your body over time.

    https://www.7forallmankind.com/modern-'a'-pocket-in-avant-rinse.html

I’m still waiting for them to arrive, but if they’re just a little tight, is it feasible that I could stretch them (as long as the waist is comfortable)? The composition is 98% cotton. 2% spandex.

    Thank you!

    Hi!
Wondering if you can help. I want to order a pair of 72% cotton 26% lyocell and 2% PU blend mother jeans. I’m used to 98 cotton 2 spandex. Is the Tri blend a very stretchy denim? (Like most jeggings these days)? Or will they bag out more than stretch? I won’t be able to return and have no way to try. I used to be a 24 and can still fit but they are tight. I’m considering a 25 in the Tri blend. They are my “exact” measurements (standing) un-stretched but I want room to sit without them being too tight in the hip/groin area or stretching out too much before the day is over ?

Hi there! I bought a pair of Frame denim le mini slim bootcut jeans in my usual 27. The waist is very comfy, though the waistband is thick; fit on hips and thighs is snug, still comfortable, but with minimal give. The issue is that I’m about 7 pounds underweight, and working on gaining those pounds back. Will these jeans stretch to accommodate slightly larger hips and thighs? Waist should be ok. I can get my entire hand in sideways if I stretch it out. Blend is 96% cotton, 3% poly, 1% elastane. Thank you!

Hi Lorna! I wanted a pair of nice black jeans. So I have a narrow waist and thick thighs. I tried on a cousin’s Levi’s 710 super skinny(74%cotton, 24%polyester and 2%elastane) and I really loved them. Unfortunately that colour isn’t available in my size.

So in the 710 super skinny series, I’m confused between two similar jeans:

    1. With 86%cotton, 11%elastomultiester and 3%elastane

    2. With 49%cotton 31%Lyocell, 18%polyester and 2%elastane

I’ve linked them down below, the two I’m confused between.
Which one do you think would be a better match to the original one I liked? Stores are shut and I can’t really try them on but I would love a shaping effect with some Levi’s texture.
Could really do with some denim expertise here 🙂

It’ll be great if you could help!

Hi 🙂 I actually couldn’t tell the difference on those by the fabric blend, there’s so many fabrics these days. I do know Lyocell is incredibly soft and stretchy though so the second pair look like they would be really stretchy and soft. So I feel like the first pair would be more of a stretch denim, and the second pair, more of a stretch jegging. Hope that helps!

Honestly, this shows a really basic understanding of the material compositions which are widely available for purchase, beyond the 98/2 ratio it is easily enough to find jeans which are 94% cotton and also free from basically comprised polyester, which instead uses elasto-emulsifier and and small amounts of nylon for a soft textured outer layer. 92% cotton denim with added elastine, elasto-emulsifier and viscose is also widely purchasable which gives an even greater amount of stretch with added efficiency regarding sweat absorption and also a softer feel without having to add extra synthetic material. Viscose is also a lesser known material in the 98/2 ratio which will be more breathable in summer and is less environmentally harmful than polyester; with viscose being produced from processed tree pulp. As well as this Lyocell which is a more modern and even more efficiently sweat absorbing material. In the mid market high street price point, River island is a leading brand in terms of offering a extremely large range is skinny jeans with all of these material mixtures for different occasions and budgets, and from experience seemingly last longer than many pairs i have had which would typically cost double the amount. although not the bare cheapest £40 can afford one a texturally high quality pair which can easily last five years or more.

    Hello,
I was wondering if a “46% Cotton, 33% lyocell, 20% recycled cotton, 1% spandex” blend for a pair of skinny jeans will loose their shape and “bag out”? These are by BDG, an Urban Outfitters brand.
Also, I was looking at another pair that is a “89% COTTON 9% ELASTOMULTIESTER 2% ELASTANE” blend, also skinny. Will these “bag out”? These are by True Religion.
I don’t like jeggings, so if these pairs would feel/stretch like that, then please let me know.

Hi ya’ll! I ordered 2 pairs of low rise Stella skinny jeans from Lucky, a size 24 and a size 25. I’m 5′, 4″ and about 110 lbs, petite frame. They are 92% cotton, 6% polly, and 2% spandex. The 25’s fit comfortably, but I can already tell the back of the waist is loose (and my lower back curves inward significantly). The 24’s are extremely tight, give me a muffin top and are too uncomfortable to wear more than an hour at this point. I always have such a problem with my jeans bagging out especially in the butt and thighs, even though they fit great when first buying. (typically Paige and lucky jeans with a cotton/poly/elastine mix). But it is so difficult to find actual low rise jeans anymore so I didn’t want to give up yet on these. So I am wondering what my best option is. Thanks!

Hello, so I always have issue with jeans bagging out. But I don’t have the option to go down a size because I am a size 23… American Eagle was my favorite brand because they always fit so nice, I started buying the 000(triple zero) but over the past few years I feel like they just bagging out super quick. I am 5’6 and about 115-120lbs
I’d like some suggestions on jeans i should purchase.. I like comfy but I’d prefer them not to loosen after a few hours. I can deal with them not feeling like leggings if it means they aren’t going to sag.

Denim is said to be a style symbol for everyday and as a denim lover, i totally love your blog. It’s interesting and will be useful for readers. Spandex is said to be the best fabric for stretch denims as it not only makes it stretchy but also provides perfect fit and durability. Inviya bare spandex (https://www.inviya.com/) is a leading spandex manufacturer and inviya spandex can be used for a variety of apparel and fashion whether it’s your favourite summer shorts or cotton spandex denim jeans.

i was a die-hard fan of old navy’s high rise rockstar skinny jean in their 24/7 sculpt fit, which was 85% cotton, 12% elastane, & 3% lycra. unfortunately, they no longer sell jeans with that makeup – i had a pair i wore for five years on a regular basis, washing every 3rd or 4th wear, & they’d still pull on like they were fresh out of the dryer, regardless whether they were in-between washes or air-dried, or i had fluctuated a few pounds. they finally gave out & ripped at the crotch a few weeks ago, much to my dismay, & i’ve been searching high & low for another pair of jeans to replace them. the key really does seem to be the 10-15% elastane/lycra content for me. if anyone has a tip for where i could find another pair of jeans like that, please let me know!!!

    Hi Lorna,
Thank you for the information. I’ve read through your article a few times now and was wondering if still applies to jeans made now?
I want to buy a Forever New jean which is a cotton and polyester blend with elastin, 77% Cotton, 19% Recycled Polyester, 4% Spandex to be exact. The jeans feel amazing on, soft, stretchy, warm and sooo comfortable. But I am a bit hesitant to buy them due to the 4% spandex. Will it just become loose and baggy or will the polyster counter that in some way?
I will really appreciate your help!

Hi Wilanie, can you link me to the jeans so I can take a look?

    Hi there!
What about KanKan jeans off of the Asian websites?
    94% Cotton, 4% t-400, 2% Spandex
Does this combo hold its shape and provide compression?
Or this one: 93% Cotton, 5% Polyester, 2% Spandex?
    TIA!!
