Cut Out Jeans – Have They Gone Too Far?

As you know, I absolutely love denim, if I didn’t, I wouldn’t have a blog dedicated to it or have been working in the industry for over 10 years. There’s not much that phases me, but there’s been a lot that’s questionable in the denim world over the past year. I’ve spoken a few times about crazy jeans that were released, whether or not jeans are becoming a gimmick, and what the industry future holds, however not much prepares me for things like this. I was originally horrified at the crotchless chap jeans that were trending a few months ago, but these new Carmar Extreme Cut Out Jeans have gone even further.

They feature a relaxed fit, with a high rise and are made from a non stretch 100% cotton denim. I don’t even know what the point in listing the fabric content is to be honest when about 90% Of the jean is actually missing, but still. The rise is around 10.5 inches, the inseam is 28 inches, and the leg opening is 12.75 inches, giving these more of a mom jeans fit. Since Carmar is a premium brand, the jeans are made in Los Angeles, California and will set you back $168! Pretty steep for bits of string, no?

Now I’m not sure exactly how anyone would wear these because surely if you were spotted out and about shopping during the day, you might be arrested for indecent exposure? I would class these are more of a collection of denim strings sewn together, especially where the back is concerned. If you can even call it a back, it’s pretty non existent and more like a thong to me. I think the only way these could possibly be styled is over a swimsuit like the model has on, otherwise they’re impossible.

I am struggling to understand the point of these extreme cut out jeans, or even understand what the designer was thinking, but more importantly, looking at them makes me want to cry. From someone who is absolutely passionate about denim, the fabric itself, the beautiful washes and the heritage of jeans in general, this is just unthinkable. Rips, holes, big tears… I fully get them, but this? What was Carmar thinking?! I know so much has been done in the denim world and they’re running out of ideas, but come on. I can’t wait for silly trends like this to fully be over and we can get some normality back in our lives again. What’s your opinion? Will you be wearing them?

This is exactly how I feel about *all* distressed denim. Except this is probably just a publicity stunt. The next step is invisible, massless jeans, as modelled by the famous King. You can wear them any time with or without any other garment. You’re wearing them right now, and I gave them to you at no charge. I call them Imajeanary™. ????

Seriously? There’s nothing there. And $180? My mantra that I’m not on this planet to stop anyone having fun or being who they want to be and most importantly wear what they like is being severely tested with these.
