Citizens of Humanity Corey Relaxed Denim Shorts in Skylite Review
I know summer is almost coming to an end, but we still have quite a lot of warm weather still to come, especially if you live on the west coast of the United States, or in other warm climates, so I thought a denim shorts review would be ideal to mix it up a bit. So my denim review this week is on the Citizens of Humanity Corey Relaxed Denim Shorts in Skylite. I actually got these from Shopbop prior to my holiday in June and lived in them all throughout my time away, and while I was back, so reviewing these denim shorts after having worn them loads seemed like a good thing to do. I usually review the newer denim, but when I love a pair so much, it’s only right to share them!
The Cut – I was first attracted to the Citizens of Humanity Corey Denim Shorts as I have a pair of the Corey jeans and love them. These feature a rise of 11 inches and an inseam of 3.5 inches, so they are a longer length, high rise short. They feature a relaxed fit, so you could call them a boyfriend short, and they have slits at the sides of the frayed leg openings. Complete with a 5 pocket styling and a 5 button closure, giving them a vintage appeal. I’m not completely sure the slits are supposed to open as much as they do on me, but I do have a larger behind which I think pushes them out, ha ha. Overall though, it’s a fantastic slouchy, high rise denim short.
The Size & Fit – Now these do run really big! My usual size is 27 in Citizens of Humanity and that’s when I’m wearing my jeans tightly fitted, but I sized down to a 26 in these as I heard they ran big. Since they are a relaxed fit, I know to always size down as I didn’t want them to be really baggy and sloppy – I actually wanted them to fit. So if you want a slimmer fit, definitely size down from your normal size, but if you do want them looser, stick to your normal size. I do think it’s best to take a size down though as they look better with a bit more structure to them. In terms of how they fit me, they are quite slim and very flattering from the front, but not tight. The back pockets are larger though so they’re not overly flattering or lifting of the bum, but what denim shorts are?
The Wash – The Skylite wash is actually stunning. It’s one of those heritage, vintage inspired washes which has an amazing washed out blue to it and fades in all the right places, but it also has authentic looking lap whiskering, frayed pocket edges and hems, little distressed holes in areas, and abrasions throughout. They look battered and used, but gorgeous because of how nicely done the wash is. They’re my favourite pair of shorts that I own! They go with everything casual that I want to wear and they’re perfect for keeping me cool on a hot day. I must have worn these denim shorts about 20 times already and they’re holding up well.
The Denim – The Citizens of Humanity Corey are made from a stretch denim containing 98% cotton and 2% polyurethane. They’re made in the USA obviously, like all COH are, and you wash them on cold. I would say they have only stretched out a bit from wearing them, but it’s enough to notice, which is why I also recommended sizing down up there. The denim itself is really lightweight and breathable, so it’s incredibly comfortable. They’re stretchy enough to be worn all day and move about with you, so you can live in these shorts day after day without any trouble.
Overall Opinion – I’m pretty sure you can tell that I LOVE these denim shorts! I don’t have any faults with them other than I would like the slits to sit a bit more flat against my skin, but that’s due to my butt unfortunately. In terms of the fit, the wash, the comfort, the minimal details etc, they’re a complete winner! They’re short enough to keep you cool, but they’re also long enough to cover your modesty and not bare any butt cheek, which is something I always look for given that I am 30 next year! If you’re in the market for a new pair of denim shorts, these are it!
