Levi’s 501 CT Boyfriend Tapered Jeans in Old Favorite Review

The Levi’s 501 jean has been a classic and a staple in the denim world for decades. Levi’s were the very first brand to ever create jeans (read the history on Levi’s) and now the brand has re-invented the 501 to create the new 501 CT. Inspired by the wearers, Levi’s took the 501 Jean and designed the perfect tapered fit. The ultimate boyfriend fit, with a little more room in the waist and a tapered, slightly cropped leg. Wear it rolled for style or un-cuffed if you like a more slouchy fit, but definitely wear it casual.

I have the 501 CT in Old Favorite, as you can see from the detailed and worn photos in this review. They have a mid rise to them and the inseam with the roll comes in at around 26″ making it cropped at the ankle. It’s 100% cotton and is the classic 5 pocket style jean that Levi’s is known for, with all the details being the same as the 501, just with a more tapered fit. They are that perfect slouchy boyfriend jean which just oozes ease and comfort! Despite being 100% cotton too, they are actually pretty comfortable due to the roomy fit.

The Old Favorite comes in that perfect 90s throwback, faded out wash with distressed wear and rips at the knees. It’s very reminiscent of a vintage and old Levi’s wash that you might find in a thrift shop or in the Urban Renewal section of Urban Outfitters, so if you are looking for a new jean instead of going vintage, but you still crave that vintage look, I would definitely recommend the Old Favorite wash to you. They have a few distressed marks on the back of the jeans in various places and two large distressed holes at the knees on the front, both in different shapes, which I think look awesome!

As for sizing, I took these jeans in my usual 100% cotton size of 27 (I’m a 26 in stretch jeans) and they fit me pretty well. Slightly loose in the waist, as intended, and slouchy in the legs. As for the back pockets, I usually don’t like the way boyfriend jeans look from behind as they tend to look quite sloppy, but I think these actually look ok. There’s something about a classic Levi’s jean that just fits well, regardless of the shape. I think it’s because it’s so timeless! These are cut straight from the hip to the thigh and have a tapered leg for the rest of the length, so they are a little more flattering than the original 501 too.

If you love the classic 501 and you like vintage jeans, then I definitely recommend the 501 CT to you! It comes in various other washes, Precita being another favourite of mine. They are just so easy to wear and with the Summer coming up, I think they will be perfect for lounging days with a simple t-shirt and some flats! As they are 100% cotton, they do stretch out some. It’s impossible to avoid that on 100% cotton jeans as they have no stretch recovery to them, so they will give. I don’t think they would shrink, you could only manage to shrink them back to normal temporarily with a hot wash, but it can damage the denim so I don’t recommend that 🙂

I am 5’5″ 124lbs. I bought them in a 25 and they are tight In the crotch so I guess I need to order them bigger. I’m trying to decide between 26 & 27. I have a pair of boyfriend style that are 26 and stretchy. Would you recommend the 27?

These do stretch out, so it depends whether or not you want them looser and slouchy, or more fitted. Have you got the option of ordering both a 26 and a 27 so you can check? Then send the other back?
